NFBMD Advocacy Skills Training Sessions

Would you like to brush up on  your advocacy skills for yourself and others? Save the dates: April 30, May 21, August 20, and September 17. We will explore a different advocacy issue each of these days.  The trainings will take place on these Saturday afternoons, from 1:30 to 5:00, over zoom. 

 

  • April 30 - Session 1: general advocacy considerations

we will discuss the general advocacy considerations.  We will look  at such questions as how to help and when to help.

  • May 21 - Session 2: how to further employment by using DORS

we will discuss how to further employment by using DORS and how to keep that dream job if discrimination occurs.

  • August 20 - Session 3: How to Get Your Dream Job and Keep It

This advocacy workshop will review how to work with DORS to get what you need for successful employment. We will also talk about how to get reasonable accommodations, keep your job if you feel you are being discriminated against, and more.

  • September 17 (Post pone, Date TBD) - Session 4:  Practicing IEP Skills

In this workshop, we will practice some of the skills that we learned at the May 21 workshop. Through role playing, we will create opportunities to make a better IEP.

  • November 11, 2022 - Session 5: Accessibility Advocacy
  • Date July 29, 2023 - Session 6: The Top Social Security Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

 

Will explore common mistakes

made by people when applying for benefits, keeping track of SSI and SSDI regulations, and what you do when you get a letter from Social Security about
the dreaded overpayment.  At the end of the afternoon you will be able to help someone with the basics of Social Security or tell them where to go for help.

 This workshop will help to acquire and practice IEP skills. Given scenarios, you will have a chance to determine what to do, and how to do it. Carlton Walker will be our facilitator.
This workshop will be good for parents that face the challenge of the IEP every year.
